Is a Career in Real Estate for You?

Thinking of becoming a real estate agent? Starting a real estate career can be an exciting journey. If you have ever thought about a career in real estate, hopefully we can provide you with some insight on what to expect.

Characteristics of a Real Estate Sales Person

It depends on what is inside you to become a successful real estate agent. These characteristics should provide you a window into what it takes to succeed.

SELF MOTIVATED – You are a business. No one is going to light the fire under you to become successful, it must come from within. Real Estate is a business where you get out of it what you put into it. There is no base salary so it is important to stay self motivated. 3 out of every 10 real estate agents fail in this business because they were not ambitious. If you are a “Go Getter”, have a consistent work ethic backed by self motivation you are a great candidate for the job.

PERSONABLE – Throughout your real estate career you will come in contact with a number of people daily. You must truly like working with and even for people. As a real estate agent you become a trusted consultant. Every client should be made to feel like it’s your only client.

DESIRE TO LEARN – You can learn something new everyday you are working in real estate. With the ever changing market even agents that have been in the business for many years need to keep an open mind to learn something new.

PRIDE IN YOURSELF & YOUR WORK – Much of the real estate business is self promotion. Being driven by your ego can be a good thing. Pointing out your accomplishments can help but be careful not to come off as too confident.

GOOD LISTENER – There is no better way to win over a client than to let them talk. You will learn to absorb so much more by sitting back and truly listening. You will learn quickly how to pick up on objectives and potential obstacles by simply listening.

PATIENCE – Buying or selling a home can be an emotional process for some. Remaining patient throughout each deal will keep your clients at ease. Additionally, results are not immediate. If you are willing to put in the work you must be willing to hold out for the results.

HAVE A “THICK SKIN” – Turn your “No’s” into “Next”. You cannot let obstacles come in your way of success. You may not win every sale so be prepared to pick yourself up and keep on trying.

PREPARED FINANCIALLY – The reality is that it may take up to 6 months for a new agent to make their first sale. Working in a commission based industry it is impossible to predict when and how much you will make on your next sale. Many new agents feel the pressure of unpaid bills and make the mistake of trying out a real estate career part time. Having a small savings set aside can relieve this pressure.

WILLINGNESS TO INVEST OWN MONEY – Keep in mind the age old adage: “You have to spend money to make money”. Agents must be prepared to invest some of the own money into personal marketing not only to get up and running but to also remain successful.
